DESCRIPTION: APW - Henry O. Stauffer, Swiss, rare "1776" form mvt, 54mm, heavy 14K rose gold original HC, gold cuvette, case originally was also with a glazed mvt observation cover which is no longer present, white enamel SS dial, SW-LS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, 18J, frosted nickel finish, s#2789 with matching serial number within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 86.8 dwt (135.0 g). A beautiful and iconic movement design that was made for the American market to celebrate the date of America's independence; Henry O. Stauffer was granted U.S. design patent D12926 on May 9th, 1882 for this unique movement style. These watches are notably rare in original gold casing and this is the first original cased example our firm has had the pleasure to handle. Although of Swiss manufacture, we have chosen to present this piece among this auction's American pocket watch category due to its essence as being a product specifically aimed to the American market.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, overhaul recommended, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered small spots and micro-fine scratches; virtually flawless dial with few micro-fine scratches; nearly mint hands; case originally was with a glazed mvt observation cover which is no longer present, case shows little wear, scattered dings and nicks; tight bow, crown shows light wear; clean plastic front crystal, mvt observation crystal and its bezel are missing.
